Guardian Services
Family Service & Children’s Aid (FSCA) provides comprehensive Guardian Services in Jackson County to support adults who are unable to fully protect or manage their personal, medical, or financial needs. Our goal is to promote safety, stability, and well-being while honoring everyone’s independence and right to self-determination.
Guardian Services is designed for at-risk adults, including older adults, individuals with developmental disabilities, or those experiencing mental or emotional challenges—who may be vulnerable to exploitation, neglect, or injury. We work closely with the Jackson County Probate Court, community partners, and natural supports to ensure everyone receives the most appropriate and least restrictive level of care.
Our Approach
At the core of Guardian Services is a personalized, “wraparound” approach that focuses on the whole person. Rather than relying solely on traditional, problem-based services, we build individualized plans that reflect each client’s strengths, goals, and support system. Services are flexible and adjusted over time to ensure the best possible outcomes.
We are committed to:
- Supporting independence and autonomy
- Utilizing the least restrictive interventions possible
- Strengthening family and community connections
- Creating client-led, strength-based service plans
- Continuously adapting services to meet evolving needs
Services Offered
Depending on individual needs and court involvement, Guardian Services may include:
- Guardianship – Court-appointed responsibility for personal and medical decision-making
- Conservatorship – Court-appointed responsibility for financial management
- Representative Payee Services – Assistance managing Social Security or similar benefits
In addition to legal roles, our team provides ongoing coordination and support, including:
- Coordinating community-based services
- Securing housing and essential benefits
- Providing consent for medical care when appropriate
- Maintaining regular contact and monitoring well-being
- Collaborating with family members, caregivers, and providers
- Attending Probate Court hearings and completing required reporting
- Assisting with long-term planning, including end-of-life arrangements
Eligibility & Referral
Services begin with a referral from anyone in the community and a thorough assessment to determine the most appropriate level of support for an adult in need of additional supports We carefully evaluate whether guardianship is necessary or if a less restrictive option—such as natural supports or community services—can effectively meet the individual’s needs. When appropriate, we also explore whether a trusted family member or friend can serve in a guardian role.
Building Support Through Community
Guardian Services connects individuals to a wide network of local resources to promote long-term stability and well-being. By “wrapping” services around each person, we help build meaningful connections, strengthen support systems, and improve overall quality of life.
